Giorgione's corner

Giorgione's corner

At the Boymans Van Beunigen museum in Rotterdam there is a small drawing in sanguine, which critics unanimously attribute to the hand of Giorgione.

The image, which shows a view of the Castle of San Zeno, was made from life, and this constitutes certain proof of the presence of the famous and mysterious painter of Castelfranco within the walls of Montagnana.

According to some art historians, it is impossible that such an illustrious painter, a guest in the city, was not asked to affix his signature inside the Duomo, which is still being completed ... and in fact, the two frescoes on the counter-façade, on the sides of the portal (Davide and Giuditta) are attributed by many experts to Giorgione and his workshop.

The Piazzola del Giorgione, located approximately at the point where the small and very precious sanguine was made, allows us to admire the east walls and the Castle of San Zeno through the eyes of the painter, as he saw them between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 1500s, because little or nothing has changed since then, and the wonder of the gaze remains unchanged over time, until today.
